Heritage Archives

by darren last modified 2010-03-07 16:31
There is a rich and largely untapped resource in Canada of files containing historical information on geotechnical laboratory and field research, geotechnical investigations, work of committees, geotechnical experience etc. Ways to identify and tap this resource have been developed by the Heritage Committee of the Society in the form of a virtual Heritage Archives web page
http://www.cgs.ca/cgsdocuments/Heritage Archives/.
The webpage can be developed in response to the interests of CGS members who wish to provide access to archival material or who wish to access material.

Currently there are three categories of material that are available in separate folders:

1. Powerpoint presentations- heritage lectures given at Canadian Geotechnical Conferences and other events
2. Photographic collections – historical photographs from important early Canadian projects
3. Information and Location for Archival Records - the location and content of accessible historical geotechnical material.
4. Lives lived - Short obituaries of members and former members of the Society.

Members of CGS, and others, are encouraged to submit candidate projects for consideration in any of these categories. The submission should give the location of the material, a description of its nature and content, its historical significance and conditions under which it can be accessed. Do not submit actual archival material as the Society has no space for storage. CDs or downloaded files of scanned photographs, drawings etc. will be welcomed.

Other useful information is also available on the CGS website:
1. Proceedings of recent Canadian Geotechnical Conferences, and
2. Copies of all early volumes of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal.

In each case, access to this information is through the Members Area of the CGS website http://members.cgs.ca/.

Contributions to the CGS Virtual Archives web pages should be sent to the Chair of the CGS Heritage Committee.
In 2009-2011, the Chair is:

Alternatively, send your proposal to the Secretary General of the Society,
