Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to welcome you to the CGS web site. I hope that you find the information that you are looking for.
This being early 2010, I am now at the mid-point of my 2-year mandate as President of the Canadian Geotechnical Society. The first year has gone by at a fast pace, and this should be the same for the coming year considering the full program that is in front of the Executive Committee.
Two new members have recently joined the Executive Committee of CGS: Marolo Alfaro, Director of the Winnipeg Section, will represent the Local Sections and Jitendra Sharma, Chair of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, will represent the Technical Divisions. They join the other current members of the Executive Committee, i.e. the President and our three Vice-Presidents: Doug Stead (Technical), Don Lewycky (Finance), and Stéphanie Perret (Communication). The Executive Committee also benefits from the support of the Secretary-General, Victor Sowa, and the Administrator, Wayne Gibson.
The members of the Executive Committee are members of the Board of the Canadian Geotechnical Society, which also includes the Directors of the Local Sections and the Chairs of our various Committees and Technical Divisions. I would like to draw your attention here to the Divisions, which play a key role in the success and well being of our Society. In addition to Jitendra Sharma, the other Technical Divisions are chaired by Ed Hoeve (Cold Regions Geotechnology), Davide Elmo (Engineering Geology), Catherine Mulligan (Geoenvironmental), Andrew Lister (Geosynthetics), Richard Jackson (Hydrogeology), and Chris Hawkes (Rock Mechanics).
The primary mandate of the Technical Divisions is to promote and facilitate the advancement, exchange and transfer of knowledge, skills and experience in their respective fields of interest, for the benefit of the Division members and the profession in general. Divisions participate in many activities, such as workshops, short courses, and technical sessions during our annual Conference. Division Chairs typically serve a 3-year term and are replaced by the Vice-Chair, who has been selected at least a year before taking the position. The Division Vice-Chair is selected by the Executive Committee of the Division, in consultation with the Vice-President Technical of the Society.
The discussions that lead to the preliminary selection of the Vice-Chair typically take place at the annual meeting of each Division during our CGS Annual Conference. Hence, I would like to invite all CGS members to attend these important Division meetings, which will be held during our upcoming conference in Calgary in September 2010. I look forward to seeing you in large numbers at the Conference.
Best wishes for 2010!
Michel Aubertin, President
