Call for Nominations, 2010 CFES/FCST
Mentorship Medal
The
CFES/FCST mentorship medal was created in 2008 to recognize the sustained and
inspirational mentorship of colleagues and employees including peers, graduate
students, undergraduate students and technicians. The
CFES/FCST Mentorship medal is presented annually to an individual from Canadian
academia, government or industry. The sole criterion for the medal is
excellence in mentoring over a sustained period of time. The guidelines for
nominating a candidate can be found on www.geoscience.ca/awards.html. The
nomination deadline for the 2010 award is October
31, 2009.

CFES/FCST 2010
La médaille du mentorat
de la CFES/FCST a été créée en 2008 pour reconnaître des actions de mentorat
entre collègues et employés incluant les pairs, les étudiants gradués et non
gradués et les techniciens. La médaille du mentorat est remise chaque année, au
Canada, à une personne du milieu académique, gouvernemental ou industriel. Le seul critère pour recevoir cette médaille
est l’excellence du mentorat durant une période de temps prolongée. Les
procédures pour présenter un candidat sont disponibles sur le site www.geoscience.ca/awards.html. Les
candidatures pour l’année 2010 doivent être soumises avant le 31 octobre
2009.

Eisenstein; 1936 - 2009

advises our members that Zdenek Eisenstein passed away on
June 1st. Zdenek Eisenstein
(Dan) was born to in
Dan received his Undergraduate and
Graduate Geotechnical education at the
Dan’s prime research and
professional interest was soft ground tunnelling, especially in urban
environments. On this and other topics he published over 160 papers and
conducted over 100 lectures and presentations worldwide. Awards included
becoming an Honorary Professor at Pontificia Universidade Catolica,
Dan was an active member of the
International Tunnelling Association (AITES / ITA). He was elected Member of
the Executive Council in 1987, First Vice President in 1989 and finally elected
and served as the President of AITES / ITA over the period 1992 – 1995.

C’est
avec tristesse que notre président, Michel Aubertin, désire informer les
membres du décès, le 1er juin dernier, de Zdenek Eisenstein. Zdenek
Eisenstein (Dan) est né à Pocatky, en Tchécoslovaquie, en 1936.
De
1950 à 1965, Dan avait fait ses études de premier et deuxième cycles en
géotechnique à l’université technique tchèque de Prague. À la suite de celles-ci
et d’une période de travail postdoctoral à Londres, en Angleterre, Dan était
devenu professeur à l’université de l’Alberta et s’était établi à Edmonton
(Canada) en 1969 avec Jana et ses deux filles. Il est devenu professeur
titulaire en 1974 et professeur émérite en 2001. Entre 1972 et 1983, Dan a
occupé quatre chaires de professeur invité : au Brésil (deux fois), en
Afrique du Sud et en Allemagne.
Le
principal champ de recherche de Dan et ses intérêts professionnels avaient pour
objet le percement de tunnels en sol mou, surtout en milieu urbain. Sur ce
sujet ainsi que sur d’autres, il a écrit plus de 160 articles et donné plus de
100 exposés et présentations à travers le monde. Parmi les honneurs qu’il a
reçus, il a été nommé professeur honoraire à la Pontificia Universidade
Catolica de Rio de Janeiro (Brésil) en 1990, il a reçu un doctorat honorifique
de l’université technique tchèque en 1991 ainsi que non moins de 7 prix pour
d’autres réussites dans les domaines du percement de tunnels et de la géotechnique.
Dan était un expert-conseil et consultant hautement estimé et considéré comme
une sommité dans son domaine. Il a joué un rôle clé dans plus de 150 projets
partout au monde, y compris le tunnel sous la Manche, entre le Royaume-Uni et
la France, les tunnels du métro de la Canada Line de Vancouver et, plus
récemment, il était le président du comité consultatif en matière de tunnel
pour la régie des transports du Grand Los Angeles.
Dan était un membre actif de l’Association internationale des travaux en
souterrain (AITES/ITA). Il avait été élu membre du Conseil exécutif en 1987,
devenait premier vice-président en 1989 et, enfin, était élu président de
l’AITES/ITA de 1992 à 1995.
