Geotechnical Research Board

MANDATE TO MONITOR, STIMULATE AND PROMOTE RESEARCH IN GEOTECHNICAL AND GEOSCIENCE FIELDS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PROFESSION AND CANADA

The Geotechnical Research Board (GRB) is the Society's forum in which all aspects and matters regarding geotechnical and geoscience research are gathered, analyzed, discussed and appropriately and effectively dealt with. The mandate of the GRB is to monitor, stimulate and promote research in geotechnical and geoscience fields for the benefit of the profession and Canada.

The GRB acts as the national and international spokesperson on all issues and aspects of geotechnical research in Canada. It can be the depository and data bank for recent and on-going, as well as planned, research.

The GRB is headed by a Chairperson selected and appointed for a three year, once renewable, term of office by the Society President. The Board's Chairperson reports to the Society President. There is a minimum of six and a maximum of fifteen members of the Board selected jointly by the Board's Chairperson and the Society President and appointed for a three year, once renewable term of office by the Board's Chairperson. Terms of office of Board members are arranged in such a way that each year about a third of the members are replaced (staggered terms of office).

Geotechnical Research Board's (GRB) Mandate and Role

The responsibility of preparing the re-allocation report to NSERC for the geotechnical/geo-environmental engineering area comes under the mandate of the Geotechnical Research Board (GRB). The mandate of the GRB as defined by the Canadian Geotechnical Society, is
to monitor, stimulate and promote research in geotechnical and geoscience fields, for the benefit of the profession and Canada,
and more specifically to:
· identify key areas of research required both in the short-term and for long-term future needs and trends.
· prioritize key issues and areas of research and seek appropriate influence to enhance successful implementation of this research work.
· focus research needs and opportunities, and make potential researchers, in particular young researchers who are in the process of establishing their research initiatives and programs, aware of these opportunities of collaboration with industry and other agencies.
· identify and describe the current and likely future trends in the research process and in the research environment.
· inform and keep the geotechnical/geo-environmental and geoscience community up-to-date with research activities and findings.

The GRB is well positioned to respond to the geotechnical/geo-environmental needs in Canada. The GRB has taken steps to become knowledgeable with respect to all geotechnical/geo-environmental research programs that are presently underway at universities and in industry. The GRB has also become knowledgeable about the issues and problems faced by the profession, consultants and contractors.
