The next President-elect of the Canadian Geotechnical Society will be appointed on January 1, 2018 and will serve as the CGS President in 2019 and 2020. The process leading to this appointment, to be confirmed at the 70th Annual CGS Conference (GeoOttawa 2017) in October 2017, is well underway.
In accordance with the CGS Bylaws, a Nominating Committee was formed in 2016 to nominate a President-elect candidate. The Committee consisted of (then) CGS President Doug VanDine (Chair), Bryan Watts and Suzanne Lacasse (Past Presidents of CGS) and Wayne Clifton, Robert Chapuis and Andrea Lougheed (general members of CGS).
The committee has nominated Mario Ruel for the position of President-elect in 2018 and Mr. Ruel has agreed to be a candidate. Nomination background on Mr. Ruel and his candidate statement were printed in the March issue of CGS News in Geotechnical News, and can be found on the CGS website at www.cgs.ca/news.
While Mr. Ruel is the candidate proposed by the Nominating Committee, any general member of the Society may nominate a candidate for election to the position of President-elect. Nominations must be received by the CGS Executive Director at execdir@cgs.ca in writing by June 15, 2017. The CGS Bylaws require that member nominations must have the written support of at least 18 general members of the Society and a statement by the candidate expressing willingness to serve as President. Further information can be obtained by CGS members from the Society’s Administration Manual available in the Members Section. CGS members can login at www.cgs.ca/login, then click Online Member Resources, go to CGS Manuals, and proceed to the Administration Manual link.
If there are no additional candidates nominated by June 15, 2017, Mr. Ruel will be elected by acclamation at the October 1, 2017 meeting of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Geotechnical Society in Ottawa. If additional candidates are nominated, selection of the President-elect will be by mail-in ballot and/or electronic ballot. Ballots will be provided to all members of the Society on or before July 15, 2017 with a deadline for receiving completed ballots no later than midnight on August 15, 2017. The results will be presented at the October 1, 2017 meeting of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Geotechnical Society.
