Dr. Doug Stead (CGS VP Technical 2009-2010) was presented with the RF Legget Medal, the Canadian Geotechnical Society’s most senior and prestigious award, at GeoOttawa 2017 for his significant lifelong contribution to the geotechnical field in Canada. Professor Charles Ng was elected as the next President of ISSMGE for the period 2017-2021 at the recent Seoul Council meeting on September 17. Dr. Tim Newson, now serves as ISSMGE Vice President North America.
Dr. Richard Bathurst (CGS President 2013-2014) has been named as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada’s Academy of Science and will be honoured on November 24 in Winnipeg. Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada are elected by their peers in recognition of outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement. His citation reads: “Richard Bathurst has made innovative and impactful contributions to the advancement and understanding of modern civil engineering geosynthetic reinforced earth retaining structures and slopes. His work demonstrates a multi disciplinary approach to the design, analysis and sustainability of these structures. His many acclaimed contributions also include themes related to earthquake geotechnical engineering, probabilistic design, full-scale model earth structure testing, materials testing, soil-structure interaction, transparent surrogate granular soils and granular particle mechanics.”
