News from Recent CGS Meetings
Some of the significant informational highlights arising from the CGS Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Business Luncheon meetings held during GeoOttawa 2017 include:
- The CGS continues to be in an excellent financial position;
- 2018 membership fees will not be increased from 2017 rates;
- The 73rd CGS Annual Conference will be held in Calgary, AB in 2020;
- A revised Conference Manual was approved by the Board of Directors;
- A motion to make Committee Chairs and the Chair of the Geotechnical Research Board full voting members of the CGS Board of Directors was passed – a vote to amend the bylaws will be put to the members next year;
- An update to the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual 4th Edition errata is underway and will be posted on the CGS website by the end of 2017 or in early 2018. Work on the Online Edition of the CFEM is delayed by the search to identify a managing editor for its production – the Technical Advisory Committee is reviewing the options to move the project forward and plans to make a decision by the spring of 2018.
- The Board of Directors approved the striking of a new Membership Committee with the expanded mandate (from that of the previous committee) to promote the CGS to current and future members, survey geoprofessionals and assess members’ expectations, explore and analyze new initiatives, increase interest in volunteering, and monitor and increase membership renewal.
To help the CGS Board of Directors continually improve the Society, we’re always looking for feedback on existing programs and ideas for new initiatives. Members are encouraged to send suggestions to the National Office to the attention of Lisa McJunkin at admin@cgs.ca; your comments are always welcomed.
