In each CGS-Geotechnical Information Network we feature a recent CGS Awardee. In this issue we feature Michel Aubertin (the newly minted CGS Executive Director!), who was awarded the 2014 CGS Geoenvironmental Award at GeoRegina 2014. Please see the CGS website http://cgs.ca/awards.php for a list of all the 2014 awardees.
“Michel Aubertin’s academic and research credentials more than speak for themselves. A much heralded professor at École Polytechnique de Montreal, he has held numerous leadership positions including the Industrial NSERC Polytechnique-UQAT Chair in Environment and Mine Wastes Management, and more recently the Scientific Director of the Research Institute on Mines and the Environment at Polytechnique.
Professor Aubertin’s teaching and research activities have focused on mining geotechnique, waste management, and reclamation of disposal sites. He has supervised over 100 graduate students and authored more than 300 peer reviewed papers published in scientific journals and conference proceedings.
His CGS credits include chairing the society’s Geotechnical Research Board and serving as President of the Society in 2009/2010. He chaired the CGS Technical Committee on Mining Geotechnique (2011-2014) – a growing area of interest as demonstrated by the five sessions on this topic at this year’s meeting in Regina.
During his illustrious career he has received numerous accolades and awards including the J.A. Franklin and Stermac citations from the CGS, the John B. Sterling Medal from the EIC and the 2014 CSCE Thomas Keefer Medal for co-authoring a paper in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal. And he can now add the 2014 CGS Geoenvironmental Award to his growing list of accomplishments."
