The launch of the new CGS website has given the CGS Heritage Committee the incentive to revise its Canadian Geotechnical Virtual Archives. This revision includes a reorganization, updating and expansion of the content.
There are now six main and three tertiary web pages in the archives that can be accessed from the secondary navigation link Canadian Geotechnical Virtual Archives, located under the CGS website’s primary navigation link Resource Centre, and include:
These web pages provide links to a great deal and a wide variety of historical information—too much to introduce here. Aside from the 2016 updated history of the CGS, new links include histories of a number of the CGS Sections, the GeoQuébec 2015 presentation on Geotechnical Pioneers from Eastern Québec, a 1987 CGS publication that summarizes the state-of-the-art at that time, and an unpublished 1983 personal memoir by Robert Legget on Geotechnique in Canada.
CGS members and others are encouraged to submit archival material for consideration. Submissions should include the location of the material, a description of its nature and content, its historical significance, and conditions under which it can be accessed. Please do not submit hardcopy archival material as the CGS has no storage facilities. Submissions or questions about submissions should be sent to the Chair of the CGS Heritage Committee, Heinrich Heinz, at Heritage@cgs.ca.
