The CGS Heritage Committee is pleased to announce that the 1928 classic paper Landslides in Canada has been added to the CGS “Virtual Archives/Canadian Geotechnical Projects” (see “(1928) Landslides in Canada”). It was written by D.A. Nichols, published in the December 1928 issue (Vol XLII, No 9) of "The Canadian Field-Naturalist" (pages 212-220), and has been uploaded with permission from the Canadian Field-Naturalist. This may be the first pan-Canadian review of landslides and includes a bibliography of "most of the important Canadian occurrences" (to 1928) and some photographs. The author, a graduate of Queen's University, worked with the Geological Survey of Canada between 1913 and 1944.
This paper was discovered in the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute's library in 2018 by Past CGS President (and Past NGI Managing Director) Dr. Suzanne Lacasse. The hand-writing on the front is by Dr. Laurits Bjerrum, a Danish landslide specialist, who was the founding Director of NGI in 1953.
